Betty Rann, now a resident of the triangle, had a sparkling career in the forties as a singer/pianist. While playing many US venues she maintained her own radio show out of New York City on ABC radio. She was the feature of a very entertaining show that included dixieland band and the usual, for era, comic MC. Her performances on the piano were legend and very fortunately some of them were recorded on glass 78s. I was able to transfer them to cassette and her mastery of the keyboard was phenomenal. She was well known for having the fastest, swing-ingest left hand around. Betty allowed me, with the help of friends Callie Warner and Chip Willis, to recreate the radio show for a performance in Chapel Hill’s Carolina Club. She and her wonderful husband, Dr. Cox were among the Club’s first members and certainly the most regular patrons until their passing a few years ago.
